Flares are usally common in crates, chests, villages, towns, etc. When a flare is thrown, it casts a red light (only visible in dark places), therefore making it a viable source of light when mining in caves or battling with monsters at nightfall. Once you throw a flare the light only lasts a couple of seconds before extinguishing. Flares also cannot be picked up once thrown.
